Vietnam’s Leaf Exports: From By-Products to High-Value Agricultural Commodities

In recent years, Vietnam’s agricultural exports have taken a new turn — with leaves emerging as a surprising yet rapidly growing category in the global food market.

According to national trade data, in the first eight months of 2025, Vietnam’s export of agricultural leaves — including lime leaves, banana leaves, sweet potato leaves, cassava leaves, and bay leaves — generated more than 392 billion VND (~15.1 million USD) in revenue.

Strong Demand from International Markets

Among these export products, lime leaves recorded the strongest growth at approximately 84.3%, followed by sweet potato leaves (+54%) and banana leaves (+22%). The leaf export segment now accounts for around 5.3% of the total fruit and vegetable export value — proving its rising importance.

What was once considered agricultural by-products is now recognized by global buyers for its role in Asian cuisine, natural food ingredients, herbal wellness, and eco-friendly food packaging — opening a new, high-value direction for Vietnam.
